Is it worth insisting on a Caesarean section?
Until very recently in Russia, it was not a matter of choice whether to give birth naturally or via surgery. Russian obstetricians treated Caesarean section as a serious medical operation. That is why it was performed exclusively when vaginal birth presented a danger to the life and health of the mother or child.
Indications for surgery include:
A narrow pelvis. A mismatch in the size of the foetus’ head and the size of the pelvis of the mother.
Placenta previa - the placenta is located over the uterine cervix, which is an obstacle to childbirth.
Obstructed labour for natural childbirth, such as a myoma in the area of uterine cervix.
Diseases where natural childbirth poses a threat to the health of the mother. A number of diseases of the cardiovascular system, kidneys, progressive myopia threatening retinal detachment, etc.
Multiple pregnancy.
Pelvic or transverse presentation of the foetus, large size of the foetus, or umbilical cord entanglement around its neck.
Development of genital herpes in late pregnancy.
Currently, with the commercialization of medicine, most of operations are carried out for medical reasons, but they are also frequently performed at the request of a woman when, backed by paying for services, these indications are unduly extended and formally recorded. For example, not everyone knows that in cases of myopia natural childbirth is permitted subject to a good condition of the fundus of the eye. Without sufficient information, women take decisions that are not entirely grounded or irresponsible.
Specialists are certain: during labour, there are important and significant processes for the life of mother and baby that are not possible in the case of a Caesarean section. It should be taken into account that even with the present level of medicine, the risk to the health and life of the expectant mother increases during surgical delivery. Complications can arise at various stages: during the operation there may be problems caused by anaesthesia, bleeding, and postoperatively the most common problems are infectious phlebitis, suppuration, and bursting of postoperative stitches as a result of infection. Pain after surgery is much more intense than after natural birth. It forces a woman to seek an acceptable position for feeding and it lasts longer.
In the event of a Caesarean section, women not only physically suffer, but also psychologically. The body does not receive a signal that the birth took place, so there is a feeling of incompleteness and abnormality of what is happening. Of course, “skin-to-skin” contact in the first minutes after the baby is born is very important. In the event of a Caesarean section, the first contact between mother and baby is postponed to a later time.
Children born in this way are held to the chest later, which can slow the arrival of milk and lower milk supply.
