About speciality

A pediatric dentist is a specialist that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dental diseases in children

Milk teeth (baby teeth) appear in children during the first year of life. And from this moment you must regularly show the child to a pediatric dentist and must monitor the status and health of the teeth from the moment they appear. Healthy milk teeth that are the basis for the formation of healthy permanent teeth. In childhood, the foundation is lain for a beautiful, white-toothed smile in adulthood; for this purpose, attention must be given not only to regular oral hygiene, but also timely visits to the pediatric dentist. A good pediatric dentist takes into account the particularities of each specific child, their physiological and emotional characteristics, and provides an individual approach and uses modern techniques and materials.

At the EMC Children’s Clinic, we are happy to offer our young patients the very best in European dentistry. First and foremost this means sincere attention and care, a kind-hearted mental attitude, which removes fear of the doctor and of the upcoming treatment. The dental office is outfitted with modern equipment and the best materials, and uses the latest methods of prevention and treatment. Parents confirm that by just the second visit to our clinic, children come calmly, because they don’t experience pain and discomfort. Dental care from early childhood enables the child to avoid many dental problems, both in the short term and in adulthood. All stuff of EMC Children's clinic speaks English.

EMC doctors’ many years of experience enables successful work with young patients in the following areas:

  • prevention and oral hygiene in childhood

  • therapy

  • child orthodontics

  • surgery

  • treatment of teeth during sleep

Children are very mobile and do not like to remain in one position for long, and unfamiliar surroundings cause fear for many, as a result of which they simply refuse to open their mouths and sit quietly. Visits to the dentist may become stressful for the child and for the parents.

In order to avoid this, the EMC Children’s Clinic often practices treatment of the teeth during sleep. Modern drugs make it possible to put the child to sleep for a strictly defined period of time needed by the pediatric dentist for treatment of damaged teeth, and to make the actual process of treatment practically unnoticeable for the young patient.

In the EMC Children’s Clinic, the safest and most easily tolerable drug to date is used in treatment of children under medically-induced sleep. It has a pleasant smell, and begins to act very quickly: the patient falls asleep after just the first breath, and 15 minutes after the end of anesthesia the patient is already able to act and move about on their own. This medication does not affect the activity of the brain, heart, liver or any other major organs and systems and therefore is ideally suited for routine anesthesia in children.

The pediatric dentists in our clinic offer the following services:

  • treatment of caries, pulpitis, removal of milk teeth, prosthetic dentistry;

  • identifying and preventing the development of malocclusion, impaired nasal breathing and abnormal development of the jaws;

  • frenuloplasty of the tongue and of the upper and lower lips;

  • sealing teeth to prevent development of caries, development of an individual treatment plan and selection of oral hygiene products;

  • setting colored fillings and braces, and removal of cosmetic defects.

Indications for dental treatment of children under induced sleep (sedation)

Treatment of children under induced sleep is appropriate when the child requires extensive dental procedures. For example, in the case of multiple tooth caries, it is necessary to visit the dentist several times. The child accumulates negative emotions and fear of the dentist and dental treatment, which leads to dental phobia. For some people, this panicked fear remains for the rest of their lives. Moreover, it is difficult for dentists to perform quality work in such conditions. But under induced sleep the treatment may be completed in one visit, and there either are none or minimal negative emotions. What’s more, sedation helps to reduce salivation, which also makes for higher quality, more effective treatment. Treatment under induced sleep is also performed in case of an allergy to local anesthetics.

How is dental treatment performed under induced sleep?

1. The child is first seated in mom or dad’s arms, on a normal chair in the office, and is told that now we’re going to play a little game of astronaut or pilot and blow up a beautiful balloon for mom. The child does not see any equipment or instruments. If the child is not over-excited, he falls asleep in 10-15 seconds. If the child cries all the same when entering the office, then it may take up to 40 seconds for the child to fall asleep.

2. Once the child has fallen asleep, he is transferred to a specially equipped dental chair.

3. Within 5 minutes after falling asleep, the dentist inspects the child’s mouth and finalizes the extent of treatment with the parents. During the treatment, the parents leave the office and come back again just before the child wakes up (the child fall asleep with his parents, so that he feels calm and doesn’t get nervous).

4. Immediately after the child falls asleep, the team of anesthesiologists connects the objective monitoring sensors and equipment, and prepares the child for the dental treatment.

5. The treatment proceeds under constant monitoring of the anesthesiologists.

6. After treatment is completed, the anesthesiologists bring the child out of induced sleep. The child wakes up with his parents next to him.

7. After 15-20 minutes in the post-anesthesia care unit, the child can drink some warm, sweet tea. After 40-60 minutes, the child goes home with his parents. The parents receive comprehensive recommendations from the doctor for care of the child’s teeth.

To make a decision regarding treatment of a child under induced sleep, you must first consult an otorhinolaryngologist, anesthesiologist, and a pediatrician, who will check for contraindications and refer you to the for the required tests (ECG, blood panel, etc.).

Our specialists provide both planned and emergency dental care for children.

Creation of comfortable conditions, an individual approach to each child, and the high professionalism of the Children’s Clinic physicians ensures effective and painless treatment, as well as lack of fear or stress for the child. We do everything to make it so that the dentist will become our little patients’ favourite doctor.
